Our Brief History
During the 1850's, ex-Gold Rush miners sought their fortunes in the waterways of the San Luis Rey river searching to find a new gold bonanza.
instead, as they panned and prospected up the river from the San Luis Rey mission church at Oceanside, they found a strange purple rock as well as Pink and Green Crystals in their gold pans. These curious 49's miners followed this water trail of bright color minerals in to Pala and then up to their source on the Majestic Queen Mountian. Here stood a huge Pegmatite spewing a vast fortune in gems into Salmon's Creek by erosion. this Pegmatite would later be called Stewart Lithia Mine, and soon became the largest producer of Lithium in the Unted States from it's vast reserves of Lepidolite Ore, and also the source of the most viivd natural Pink Tourmaline in history.
During the late 1800s, Chinese miners and laborers harvested electric pink tourmaline crystals and sent them back to friends and family in China. The Empress Dowager Cixi became interested in these gems and sent her officials to the mines to acquire more of the gems. These gems became popular among the rulers of the time, including the Romanov Czars and Queen Victoria. Even today in China, pink or red tourmaline gems are very popular and highly valued.
